The Hudson resembles a slurpee more than a river these days, especially at ebb tide, when ice streams down from the north.

Crossing evokes dreams of an arctic passage, the tug-boat slipping in to break up flows and jams, the ferry slowly following a trail of open water, ice and hulls creaking.
