In darkness, light can create such brightness, a single source carried and bounced, its intensity spread to a far reach. 

Calibrating light in photography is technical, a measure of luminance. Used one way, a light meter quantifies the amount of light on a scene. Used another, the amount reflected. The exposure and the resulting images differ. The capabilities and choices made are when science becomes art.
